Modern Sugarcane Cultivation & Ratoon Management: Comprehensive Scientific Protocol

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) is India's principal commercial cash crop, cultivated over 5 million hectares in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat. With increasing water scarcity and harvesting labor costs, modern cane agronomy has pivoted to wide-row trench planting (4 to 5 feet), subsurface drip fertigation, and scientific ratoon management.

1. Trench Planting vs. Traditional Ridge & Furrow

Traditional planting at 2.5–3 feet causes severe lodging, impedes mechanization, and yields low single-cane weight (800–900g). In contrast, the Deep Trench Method:

  • Digs 30 cm deep trenches at 4.5 to 5.0 feet row spacing using tractor-mounted trenchers.
  • Facilitates tractor inter-culture (weeding, earthing-up) without damaging root zones.
  • Enhances sunlight interception and air circulation, increasing tillering and single cane weight to 1.4 – 1.8 kg.
  • Saves 30% water and enables simultaneous intercropping of short-duration legumes (chickpea, moong, urad) or potato.

2. Sett Selection, Seed Rate & Fungicide Treatment

  • Seed Rate: 25,000 to 30,000 two-budded setts per acre (approx. 2.5 to 3.0 tonnes of healthy seed cane).
  • Selection: Use the upper two-thirds portion of healthy 9–10 month old cane (higher sucrose and moisture content ensures faster bud germination).
  • Mandatory Sett Treatment:
    1. Soak setts in Carbendazim 50% WP @ 1g/liter + Imidacloprid 17.8% SL @ 0.5ml/liter water for 15 minutes to prevent red rot (Colletotrichum falcatum) and protect buds from termites.
    2. Treat with Acetobacter diazotrophicus (nitrogen-fixing endophyte) bio-fertilizer slurry before planting to fix 30–40 kg atmospheric N/acre.
  • Calculate Population: Use the KhetiSetu Plant Population Calculator to verify your row-to-row spacing.

3. Balanced Nutrition & Drip Fertigation Schedule

Sugarcane is an exhaustive feeder requiring approximately 100 kg N : 35 kg P₂O₅ : 45 kg K₂O per acre:

| Growth Stage | Days After Planting | Fertilizer Dose / Action | |---|---|---| | Basal Application | Day 0 (At Planting) | 50 kg DAP + 35 kg MOP + 10 kg Zinc Sulphate | | Formative / Tillering | 30 – 90 DAP | 45 kg Urea split weekly through drip | | Grand Growth Period | 90 – 180 DAP | 50 kg Urea + 35 kg MOP + 10 kg Ferrous Sulphate | | Maturation Stage | 180 – 270 DAP | Withhold Nitrogen; apply 0:0:50 foliar @ 1.5% for sucrose accumulation |

4. Scientific Ratoon Management (पेड़ी गन्ना प्रबंधन)

Ratoon crops cost 30% less to produce than plant crops because seed and land preparation costs are eliminated. To achieve ratoon yields comparable to plant crops:

  1. Flush Stubble Shaving (कंस छंटाई): Shave old cane stumps flush with ground level within 7 days of harvest using sharp stubble shavers. Deep underground buds produce vigorous, thicker tillers.
  2. Trash Shredding & Mulching: Do NOT burn cane trash. Shred crop residue with a tractor-drawn trash shredder and spread it as a 10 cm blanket between rows. This conserves 40% soil moisture, suppresses weeds, and adds 3–4 tonnes of organic carbon per acre.
  3. Band Placement of Fertilizers: Apply 25% extra nitrogen than the plant crop (approx. 125 kg N/acre) directly in root zones alongside stubbles.

5. Pest & Disease Management

  • Early Shoot Borer (Chilo infuscatellus): Dead hearts with offensive odor during 30–60 DAP. Apply Chlorantraniliprole 18.5% SC @ 150 ml in 200 liters water/acre at planting or early shoot emergence.
  • Top Borer (Scirpophaga excerptalis): Shot holes in leaves and "bunchy top". Release Trichogramma chilonis egg parasitoids @ 20,000/acre.
  • Red Rot (Colletotrichum falcatum): Yellowing of upper leaves, longitudinal red discoloration with white cross-patches inside cane. Uproot and burn diseased clumps; apply Trichoderma viride enriched FYM in soil.
