Commercial Pomegranate (Bhagwa) Cultivation & Disease Control
Pomegranate (Punica granatum) is one of India's most lucrative commercial dryland horticultural fruit crops. The soft-seeded, deep-red cultivar Bhagwa (Sindhuri) accounts for over 85% of commercial exports to Europe and the Middle East.
1. High-Density Planting Geometry & Rootstock
- Planting Distance:
- Standard spacing: 4.5 m × 3.0 m (296 plants per acre).
- High-density spacing: 4.0 m × 2.0 m (500 plants per acre on drip irrigation with regular canopy pruning).
- Pit Preparation: 1m × 1m × 1m pits filled with 25 kg well-decomposed FYM + 1 kg Single Super Phosphate (SSP) + 50g Trichoderma viride + 100g Neem cake.
- Verify Acre Density: Use the KhetiSetu Plant Population Calculator.
2. Bahar Regulation Strategy (बहार नियमन)
Pomegranate flowers continuously under tropical Indian conditions. To obtain uniform, high-quality export fruit, flowering is synchronized by inducing controlled water stress (Bahar Regulation):
- Hasta Bahar (September–October Flowering): Best fruit quality, bright red arils, and highest market pricing (harvested in February–April). Recommended for areas with assured irrigation.
- Ambe Bahar (January–February Flowering): Flowers during winter; harvests in June–July. High risk of fruit cracking if summer rains occur early.
- Mrug Bahar (June–July Flowering): Relies on monsoon rains; lower water costs but highest risk of Bacterial Blight (Telya) due to high humidity and warm temperatures.
3. Integrated Management of Bacterial Blight (Telya - Xanthomonas axonopodis)
Bacterial Blight causes dark brown to black oily spots on leaves, nodal stem cankers that cause branch breakage, and characteristic L- or Y-shaped cracks on fruit rinds:
- Sanitation: Prune infected twigs 5 cm below the visible blight margin during dry weather; immediately paste cut ends with Copper Oxychloride (COC) 50% WP paste (50g in 1 liter water) or Bordeaux paste (10%).
- Preventive Foliar Spraying:
- Streptocycline (90:10 Streptomycin sulphate + Tetracycline hydrochloride) @ 0.5g/liter + Copper Oxychloride @ 2.5g/liter.
- Alternate with 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1,3-Diol (Bronopol 95%) @ 0.5g/liter.
- Systemic Resistance Induction: Spray Potassium Phosphite (0:0:50) @ 3g/liter or Salicylic acid @ 0.3g/liter to bolster plant immune defense.
