Commercial Polyhouse Farming: Protected Cultivation & Economics
Protected cultivation inside Naturally Ventilated Polyhouses (NVPH) protects high-value horticultural crops from hail, frost, scorching heat, and unseasonal rainfall. By regulating micro-climates, farmers achieve 3 to 5 times higher yields than open-field cultivation, harvesting top-grade, blemish-free produce for premium retail supermarkets and export markets.
1. High-Value Crops Suited for Polyhouse Farming
- Colored Bell Peppers (Red & Yellow Capsicum): Yield: 35–45 tonnes per acre; Market price: ₹60 – ₹120/kg.
- Parthenocarpic English / Dutch Cucumber: Seedless cucumbers yielding 40–50 tonnes per acre within 100–120 days.
- Indeterminate Cherry Tomatoes: Continuously bearing vines yielding 30–40 tonnes per acre.
- Floriculture (Dutch Cut Roses, Gerbera, Carnation, Orchids).
2. Polyhouse Specifications & Cladding
- Standard Unit Size: 1,000 sq meters (approx. 10 Gunthas / 0.25 Acre) or 4,000 sq meters (1 Acre).
- Structural Frame: Hot-dip galvanized steel pipes (GI class B) designed to withstand 120 km/h wind speeds.
- Cladding Material: 200-micron multi-layered UV-stabilized polyethylene film with anti-dust, anti-condensation, and anti-drip internal coatings.
- Ventilation: Top ridge ventilation (1.0 to 1.2 m height) and side curtains fitted with 40-mesh insect-proof nylon nets to exclude whiteflies and thrips.
- Shade Screens & Foggers: 50% aluminized thermal shade nets for summer radiation control and high-pressure 4-way misting foggers (operating at 4 bar pressure) to maintain 60–75% relative humidity.
3. Economics of a 1-Acre Naturally Ventilated Polyhouse
| Capital Expenditure / Parameter | Estimated Cost (₹) | |---|---| | Polyhouse Structure & Civil Work (4,000 m²) | ₹34,00,000 – ₹38,00,000 | | Drip Fertigation & Automation Unit | ₹3,50,000 – ₹4,50,000 | | Foggers & Shade Net System | ₹2,50,000 – ₹3,50,000 | | Raised Bed Preparation, Soil Solarization & Cocopeat | ₹2,00,000 – ₹2,50,000 | | Total Project Cost | ₹42,00,000 – ₹48,00,000 | | NHB Subsidy (50% for General / 50% Max ₹56L) | ₹21,00,000 – ₹24,00,000 (Direct Grant) | | Farmer Equity / Bank Loan | ₹21,00,000 – ₹24,00,000 | | Annual Gross Revenue (Colored Capsicum) | ₹25,00,000 – ₹32,00,000 | | Annual Operating Costs | ₹8,00,000 – ₹10,00,000 | | Net Annual Profit | ₹15,00,000 – ₹22,00,000 / Year |
