High-Yield Mustard (Sarson) Cultivation & Aphid Management
Indian Mustard (Brassica juncea) is the country's most vital winter Rabi edible oilseed, cultivated across Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. Achieving 10 to 14 quintals per acre yields requires precision sowing during the October temperature window, mandatory Sulphur application to boost seed oil content, and proactive management of Mustard Aphids (Mahu / Chepa).
1. Sowing Window & Certified High-Yielding Varieties
- Optimal Sowing Window: 10th October to 25th October (when day temperatures drop below 32°C and night temperatures hover around 18–20°C). Sowing after 10th November exposes the flowering crop to peak aphid infestations in January.
- Top Approved Varieties:
- RH-725: Bold seeded; 40% oil content; matures in 135–140 days; suitable for Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan.
- Giriraj (DRMRIJ-31): High yield potential (12–14 q/acre); 41% oil; exceptional drought tolerance.
- Pusa Mustard 30 & 31: Low erucic acid (<2%) quality varieties.
- Seed Rate: 1.5 to 2.0 kg per acre (over-seeding causes crowding, weak stalks, and severe lodging).
- Thinning (विरलीकरण): Mandatory thinning at 15–20 days after sowing to maintain 10–12 cm plant-to-plant spacing.
2. Balanced Nutrition: The Critical Role of Sulphur
Mustard requires 32 kg N : 16 kg P₂O₅ : 12 kg K₂O + 15 kg Sulphur per acre:
- Why Sulphur is Non-Negotiable: Sulphur is the building block of oil-synthesizing amino acids (methionine and cysteine). Applying 15 kg/acre elemental Sulphur (90% Bentonite Sulphur granules) or Single Super Phosphate (SSP) increases oil concentration by 2.5% to 3.5% and seed yield by 20%.
- Basal Dose: 50 kg SSP (supplies both Phosphorus & Sulphur) + 20 kg MOP + 25 kg Urea at sowing.
- Top Dressing: Apply 30 kg Urea at first irrigation (28–35 days after sowing at flowering initiation).
- Calculate exact fertilizer bags using the KhetiSetu Fertilizer Calculator.
3. Pest & Disease Management
- Mustard Aphid (Lipaphis erysimi - माहू / चेपा): Greenish-yellow aphids cluster on flower buds, pods, and tender shoots, sucking sap and secreting sticky honeydew.
- Economic Threshold Level (ETL): 20–25 aphids per 10 cm central twig or 1.5 cm aphid colony on 20% plants.
- Preventive/Early Spray: Spray Neem Seed Kernel Extract (NSKE 5%) or Azadirachtin 10,000 ppm @ 1ml/liter.
- Chemical Spray: Dimethoate 30% EC @ 1.5ml/liter OR Thiamethoxam 25% WG @ 0.4g/liter (80g/acre) in 150 liters water.
- White Rust (Albugo candida): White blister-like pustules on leaf undersides and swollen "stag-head" floral malformations. Spray Metalaxyl 8% + Mancozeb 64% WP @ 2g/liter or Copper Oxychloride 50% WP @ 2.5g/liter.
