High-Yield Hybrid Maize Production & Fall Armyworm Management

Maize (Zea mays), dubbed the "Queen of Cereals", possesses the highest genetic yield potential among grain crops. In India, maize has expanded rapidly due to soaring demand from poultry feed, cattle feed mills, industrial starch, and the national 20% Ethanol Blending Programme (E20).

1. Sowing Season & Optimal Seed Rate

Maize thrives in Kharif (June–July), Rabi (October–November), and Spring (January–February):

  • Seed Rate: 7 to 8 kg per acre for single-cross grain hybrids; 9 to 10 kg per acre for baby corn and sweet corn.
  • Spacing: 60 cm row-to-row and 20 cm plant-to-plant (targeting a plant population of 33,000 plants per acre).
  • Interactive Calculation: Accurately determine seed quantity using the KhetiSetu Seed Rate Calculator.
  • Sowing Depth: Place seeds 3 to 4 cm deep in moist soil. Sowing deeper than 5 cm causes poor coleoptile emergence and weak seedling vigor.

2. Critical Fertilizer Application (NPK & Zinc)

Maize requires 60 kg N : 24 kg P₂O₅ : 24 kg K₂O per acre for a 30–35 quintal/acre yield:

  1. Basal Application (At Sowing): Apply 50 kg DAP + 40 kg MOP + 10 kg Zinc Sulphate (21%) per acre. Never mix Zinc directly with DAP.
  2. First Top Dressing (Knee-High Stage, 25–30 Days): Broadcast 35 kg Urea per acre followed by light earthing-up.
  3. Second Top Dressing (Tasseling / Flowering Stage, 45–50 Days): Broadcast 30 kg Urea per acre.
  4. Third Top Dressing (Grain Filling / Silking Stage, 65–70 Days): Broadcast 20 kg Urea per acre.

3. Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) IPM Protocol

The invasive Fall Armyworm (FAW) can cause 100% defoliation and severe cob damage if uncontrolled:

A. Diagnostic Symptoms:

  • Seedling Stage (V3–V6): Pinholes and papery windows on young leaves created by early instars.
  • Knee-High Stage (V8): Extensive leaf skeletonization and deep ragged holes with copious coarse sawdust-like fecal frass in the central whorl.

B. Step-by-Step Window Management:

  1. Window 1 (At Sowing): Mandatory seed treatment with Cyantraniliprole 19.8% + Thiamethoxam 19.8% FS @ 4 ml/kg seed protects seedlings for 20 days.
  2. Window 2 (15–20 Days After Sowing): Install 5 FAW pheromone traps per acre. Spray biopesticide Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt kurstaki) @ 2g/liter or Metarhizium anisopliae @ 5g/liter.
  3. Window 3 (Severe Infestation >10% plants): Spray Emamectin Benzoate 5% SG @ 0.4g/liter (80g/acre) OR Chlorantraniliprole 18.5% SC @ 0.4ml/liter (80ml/acre) directed straight into the plant whorl using a solid cone nozzle.
  4. Calculate exact spray volume and dilution using the KhetiSetu Pesticide Dose Calculator.
