Commercial Tomato Farming: High-Yield Trellised Production
Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is one of India's most commercially dynamic horticultural crops. While traditional bush cultivation suffers from soil-contact fruit rotting, fruit borers, and low picking quality, trellised staking with drip irrigation and plastic mulching doubles productivity to 30–45 tonnes per acre while fetching premium Grade-A market prices.
1. Nursery Management & Raised Bed Preparation
- Hybrid Seed Rate: 50 to 60 grams per acre (using 98-cell pro-trays filled with sterilized cocopeat, vermicompost, and Trichoderma harzianum).
- Seedling Age: Transplant 21 to 25 day-old seedlings having 4–5 true leaves and pencil-thick stems.
- Bed Dimensions & Mulching:
- Bed top width: 90 cm; Bed height: 30 cm; Walking path between beds: 60 cm.
- Install dual lateral drip lines per bed.
- Lay 25-micron silver-black reflective plastic mulch film (silver side up to reflect light and deter aphids/whiteflies; black side down to suppress weed emergence).
2. Trellis Staking Protocol (बांस-तार स्टेकिंग)
- Erect 8-foot treated bamboo or GI pipes every 12 feet along the bed row, sunk 2 feet into the ground.
- Run two parallel galvanized iron (GI) wires (12 or 14-gauge) at 2.5 feet and 5 feet heights.
- Tie UV-stabilized plastic twine from the top wire down to the base of each tomato plant.
- Prune suckers below the first fruit fork to maintain 2 strong main leader stems.
3. Drip Fertigation Protocol (Per Acre Schedule)
| Growth Phase | Fertilizer Formulation | Frequency & Water Depth | |---|---|---| | Vegetative (1–30 DAT) | 19:19:19 @ 3 kg/acre + Micronutrients | Twice weekly through drip | | Flowering & Early Fruit Set (31–60 DAT) | 12:61:0 (MAP) @ 3 kg + 13:0:45 (Potassium Nitrate) @ 3 kg | Every 3 days | | Fruit Bulking & Harvesting (61–120 DAT) | 0:0:50 @ 4 kg + Calcium Nitrate @ 2.5 kg + Boron 20% @ 250g | Alternating weekly |
Note: Calcium Nitrate and Boron must be applied independently to avoid chemical precipitation. Blossom End Rot (black sunken bottom of tomatoes) is completely prevented by maintaining adequate soluble Calcium and Boron.
4. Critical Pest & Disease Management
- Early Blight (Alternaria solani): Target-board concentric brown rings on lower foliage. Spray Mancozeb 75% WP @ 2.5g/liter or Difenoconazole 25% EC @ 0.5ml/liter.
- Late Blight (Phytophthora infestans): Water-soaked black lesions with white downy cottony mold on the undersides during cool, fog-laden weather. Spray Cymoxanil 8% + Mancozeb 64% WP @ 2g/liter or Metalaxyl-M 4% + Mancozeb 64% WP @ 2.5g/liter.
- Tomato Pinworm (Tuta absoluta): Translucent blotch leaf mines and dark pin-holes near fruit calyx. Install 16 Tuta pheromone delta traps per acre. Spray Chlorantraniliprole 18.5% SC @ 0.4ml/liter or Spinetoram 11.7% SC @ 1ml/liter.
