Commercial Dairy Farming: 10-Milch Animal Commercial Blueprint
Commercial dairy farming is one of the most reliable year-round cash flow enterprises for rural families. However, managing high-yielding milch animals requires shifting from traditional tethered sheds to open loose-housing systems, scientifically formulated Total Mixed Rations (TMR), and green fodder silage preservation.
1. Selecting High-Yielding Animal Breeds
| Breed | Origin / Traits | Daily Milk Yield | Fat % | Best Suited For | |---|---|---|---|---| | HF Crossbred (Holstein Friesian) | Black & white markings; high peak yield | 18 – 25 Liters | 3.5% – 3.8% | High liquid milk volume markets | | Jersey Crossbred | Reddish-brown; heat tolerant | 14 – 18 Liters | 4.2% – 4.5% | Tropical climates, dairy cooperatives | | Murrah Buffalo | Jet black, tightly curled horns | 12 – 16 Liters | 7.0% – 8.5% | Premium fat-based pricing, ghee/paneer |
Buy animals in their 2nd or 3rd lactation, 15 to 30 days after calving, with calves at foot, verified through 3 consecutive milkings.
2. Loose Housing Shed Design (कम लागत का खुला शेड)
Tethering cows in closed sheds causes heat stress, mastitis, and leg injuries. The Open Loose Housing System features:
- Covered Shed Area: 40 sq ft per cow with 12-foot high insulated roofing (asbestos or color-coated sheet with thatch underneath).
- Open Paddock Run: 80 sq ft per cow surrounded by GI pipe railings allowing unhindered movement, exercise, and social interaction.
- Continuous Water Troughs: Clean, cool drinking water available 24 hours a day (cows drink 80–120 liters of water daily).
- Rubber Cow Mats: Non-slip 25mm grooved mats in the covered area prevent hoof lesions and mastitis.
3. Year-Round Fodder Security & Silage Pits
A 10-cow dairy requires 300 kg green fodder daily (30 kg per animal). Cultivating 1 to 1.5 acres of multi-cut fodder (Super Napier, CO-5, Maize, Lucerne) ensures nutritional independence:
- Maize Silage Making: Harvest maize at 65% moisture (milky dough kernel stage). Chop to 1.5 cm lengths using a motorized chaff cutter.
- Pack tightly into bunker or pit silos with 2% molasses and 0.5% salt to expel all air.
- Anaerobic fermentation creates nutritious sweet lactic-acid silage ready in 45 days, stable for up to 18 months.
4. Financial Capital Budget & Economics (10-Cow Unit)
- Cost of 10 High-Yielding Crossbred Cows (@ ₹80,000): ₹8,00,000
- Civil Shed Construction (1,200 sq ft @ ₹350/sq ft): ₹4,20,000
- Milking Machine, Chaff Cutter & Milk Cooler: ₹1,80,000
- Working Capital (Feed, vaccines for 1st cycle): ₹1,00,000
- Total Project Outlay: ₹15,00,000
- Bank Loan (75% to 85%): ₹12,00,000 (Available at 4% effective interest via Pashu KCC or 3% rebate under AHIDF).
- Daily Milk Output (8 in milk @ 15 L): 120 Liters/day.
- Monthly Milk Revenue (@ ₹36/L): ₹1,29,600.
- Monthly Feed, Green Fodder & Medicine Costs: ₹65,000.
- Net Monthly Operating Cash Flow: ₹64,600 / Month.
