National Bamboo Mission (NBM)

National Bamboo Mission (NBM)

Promotion of bamboo plantation and developing a complete value chain from production to marketing.

Growing "Green Gold" for Stable Income

The restructured National Bamboo Mission (NBM) was launched to increase the area under bamboo plantation in non-forest Government and private lands. Bamboo is often called "Green Gold" due to its versatility and fast growth, providing a steady income for farmers.

Key Objectives: - Area Expansion: Increasing bamboo cultivation in non-forest lands. - Value Chain Development: Connecting farmers directly to markets and industries (furniture, paper, textile, energy). - Skill Development: Training artisans and farmers in bamboo harvesting and processing.

Why Farmers should Grow Bamboo: 1. Low Maintenance: Once established, bamboo requires minimal care compared to traditional crops. 2. Climate Resilient: Bamboo can grow in various soil types and is resistant to many pests. 3. Regular Income: After the first 3-5 years, bamboo can be harvested annually for decades. 4. Eco-friendly: Bamboo sequester carbon efficiently and prevents soil erosion.

Support and Subsidies: The government provides financial assistance for setting up bamboo nurseries, plantation activities, and establishing primary processing units like bamboo treatment plants.

Applications of Bamboo: Bamboo is used in construction, eco-friendly lifestyle products, paper pulp, agarbatti sticks, and even as a source of bio-energy and ethanol.
