Overview Stem Rust of wheat is caused by the fungus Puccinia graminis. It affects bread wheat, durum wheat, and barley. It produces reddish-brown pustules on stems and leaves that rupture to release millions of spores.
Key Symptoms - Reddish-Brown Pustules: Oblong, reddish-brown pustules appear on stems and leaves. - Lodging: Heavily infected stems weaken and break, causing the crop to fall over (lodge).
Management 1. Resistant Varieties: The most effective control is planting rust-resistant cultivars. 2. Chemical Control: Spray Propiconazole 25 EC (1 ml/L of water) at the first appearance of rust symptoms.
